A Heart Issue: Reflections on the Death of Charlie Kirk

I am heartbroken for Charlie Kirk’s wife and young children. I have been praying for God to strengthen and comfort them in a time that is incomprehensible to the rest of us.

And I am angry. What kind of nation do we live in where a man cannot speak clearly, openly, honestly, and with great reason—about his faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, about his strong moral stance rooted in God’s Word, and about his deep love for this country and its people—without paying for it with his life?

Who was Charlie Kirk? I would say that, first and foremost, he would describe himself as a Christian. His strong moral beliefs, rooted in his study of God’s Word, shaped the way he engaged with others—inviting them into conversations about why they believe what they believe. He was deeply committed to seeking truth—not just “his truth,” but what is true for all.

Charlie went to college campuses and encouraged people to ask questions and present their arguments. I never heard him belittle someone for holding a different belief, yet he never backed down from defending his own stance with clear reasoning. Trained in the Socratic method, he engaged in dialogue thoughtfully, using syllogisms and reasoned discussion to explore ideas in the marketplace of thought.

His beliefs led him to be conservative in his political stance. Our moral convictions flow from our understanding of Scripture and influence every area of our lives, including our political views. While many try to separate the two, the beliefs that shape us inevitably shape our worldview. In a country that is governed by its people, those convictions naturally ripple out into the polity. And while you may not agree with every conclusion he reached, you should surely agree that he had the right to live in a nation where he could freely express those opinions—and even use his reasoning and critical thinking to persuade others.

According to his wife, he was a wonderful father, a loving husband, and a leader in their family. He was a man to be admired for living out in private what he professed in public.

Again, I can’t get over the fact that this young man—only 31 years old—was taken from this life simply for living the life he professed. Because of his faith, his convictions, and his dedication to truth, he had a profound influence on many.

So, why in the wake of his murder, is there an outcry against the grief that is being publicly expressed over his death? Why are some trying to compare his assassination to the tragic deaths of children in school shootings? Yes, our country did just experience yet another tragic incident involving a student senselessly shooting students at a Colorado High School. Two students were shot and injured. The shooter, also a student, turned the gun on himself, taking his own life. Our hearts break for the families of those children.

But, where exactly is the comparison? School shootings, horrific as they are, are often followed by attempts to rationalize the violence—as if there could ever be a reasonable reason to commit such an act. Whether in words, writings, or manifestos, those faulty justifications are typically grievance-based, morally warped, ideologically inconsistent, or self-justifying—never sound moral or legal defenses. The victims are rarely targeted for their faith, beliefs, or message, but are instead caught in the path of chaos. The grief that follows those tragedies is real and raw, and I have never once heard anyone defend a school shooter. What we hear is heartbreak, compassion, and sorrow for the families left behind.

But Charlie Kirk’s death is different. This was no random act of senseless violence. This was a targeted, deliberate act meant to silence a man whose very life was dedicated to reasoned debate, truth-telling, and bold faith. One precise shot. One clear intention: to stop his voice.

That is why the grief feels different. That is why the anger is sharper. Because this was not chaos. This was an assassination. Cold-blooded murder.

And yet, even here, we must remember: gun violence is not the issue. I say this because typically guns are blamed for the violence problem…even though it usually takes a person on a mission to pull the trigger. At its root, it is a heart issue. A heart so hardened by hatred, sin, and rage that it believes a bullet can silence truth. Until hearts are transformed, until lives are changed by Christ, violence will continue to flow from broken people in a broken world

God Himself speaks in Ezekiel 36:26–27:

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.”

While this was first spoken to the nation of Israel, it is deeply relevant to our hearts today. We all need to pray this verse for ourselves. May we live and move with the Spirit of God living within us, bringing us to repentance and giving us humble hearts toward the broken, both in ourselves and in others. May He remove the lies that have become triggers in our hearts, lies that twist words into meanings never intended or implied.

We have been so ingrained with the deceptions of the enemy in this nation that we no longer recognize truth when it is spoken. Too often, we hear only what our itching ears want to hear. But God’s Word calls us higher—toward truth, toward repentance, and toward hearts made new in Him.

And as we are transformed and sanctified by the Holy Spirit, I pray that each of us will boldly proclaim the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ to this broken world, so that we, too, may hear from our heavenly Father, just as I am sure Charlie now hears:

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Review
I have to say that I really love this study Bible. I've had been pouring over its contents since I received it from the publisher, thinking that this would be a great study Bible for the hubs. But this is not a study Bible for men only. It is for everyone.

In the Introduction, it says, "This study Bible is based on a simple yet profound biblical worldview: the glory of God through the advancement of His kingdom. This is the unifying theme of scripture from Genesis to Revelation."  And with this study Bible Dr. Evans endeavors to "help us study the Scripture with a kingdom mindset, seeking to identify God's rule over every area of our life."

There are some unique features in this Bible that I have not seen in other study Bibles. One such feature is the "Hope Words" placed throughout this Bible. They are such encouraging words to encounter as you are reading through a passage of scripture. They are set apart in a simple but decorative box and say such things as, "Stop focusing on what you can't do. Start focusing on what God can do." This particular one was placed in Pauls' letter to the Ephesians at the end of chapter 3...after his prayer for the Ephesians. Beautiful.  Or in John among the verses where Jesus is praying for His disciples, "God calls us to go against the grain when the grain is going against God. Be in the world, not of the world."

Another unique feature is the digital links to video devotionals and teachings from Dr. Evans. They are QR codes that you can scan with your phone or iPad and they take you to the videos. And yes, I have watched a few of the videos and they contain such good scriptural teaching designed to enhance your study experience by helping you dive deeper into a topic or providing encouragement in your study. There are also links to videos that take you to video introductions to each book of the Bible as well as Overview videos of both the Old and New Testament found in the front material, "How to Study the Bible" section. So you not only have the written intro that you would expect in a study Bible, you have video teaching to get you into the study. You will love it!

There are multiple covers available for this cover:

  • Hardcover
  • Black/Brown Leather Touch
  • Black Genuine Leather
  • British Tan Leather Touch
  • Purple Leather Touch

                                                            By: Kelly Balarie

She didn't so much as say hi to me. In fact, even worse, she walked right past me, looking the other direction. She pretended I wasn't there. Hmph!! After all I've done for her. After all I've given her. After how I've gone out of my way to love her.

Now I'm the one left looking like a crazed waving-at-the-air fool.  Like - an idiot.

I humph at her husband along the way to my church seat. Silently, I critique her in my mind, She's rude. Before not too long, I get sidetracked by my own thoughts: Everyone always hurts me. Like that boy, I asked to dance in 4th grade. Like those girls who circled up to whisper about me in that damp locker room. Like the group of women who act like they're far better than me.

I'm supposed to be listening in church, but who can listen, thinking about all this, all of them!?

Here, I find myself, in the heat of a horrible battle. You can always tell if you're in the heat of a battle. Almost instantly, your soul-crushing problem magnifies 100x larger than your promise-keeping God. Suddenly, you're standing weaponless, in all-out combat within your own mind. Hardly able to win.

Ever been there?

I've struggled through a lot – massive health scares, depression, an eating disorder, financial debt, and relationship-severing dramas. Battles. Huge, hard-fought battles, loaded with momentary decisions of pain, struggle, and uncertainty.

I remember the time:

1. The doctor returned to the room with the clipboard saying, "You really might have Mulitple Sclerosis."
I thought: How do I keep my thoughts close to God with this kind of news?
2. My colicky newborn made me pace my hallways 24-7. Sleepless, hardly thinking and powerless to change my health situation, I didn't know what to do.
I thought: How do I still love people when my whole life is unraveling?

3. A family member called me to say I really should get on setting up long-term care for myself.
I thought: How do I deal with the fact all my dreams will now look different than I thought?

Through all this, I realized, real wisdom is having a battle plan.

Let’s talk about Christ-centered battle-plan preparedness. Begin by asking yourself: What am I currently facing?

Identifying your main struggles (resentment, regret, trauma, unforgiveness, bitterness, anger, fear) is to allow God to help you win your battle. For example, for me, underneath that issue with the girl, was an old war full of rejection, humiliation, and abandonment from years past. Underneath, were old battles I’d lost – because they were left unaddressed. Therefore, they left me with resentment toward God.

Seeing our battles for what they are, gives us a clear-cut strategy to fight - and win.  It also removes all the pent-up offenses that, like plaque, cover our hearts.

What about you? Do you emotionally respond to happenings set before you or do you wisely act based on God’s Word and promises?

Today, you can fight your battle in a new way. Consider:

1. Asking God what feelings of fear, worry, anger, resentment, neglect, and hurt He desires you give to him.
2. Giving those hurts to Jesus, by saying, "Jesus, I am not meant to carry these. Forgive me. They've hurt me for far too long. I know and believe you have peace, joy, life, and freedom for me as I give you these things."
3. Bless any women who have hurt you.
4. Reframing your moments of hurt. (Example: when she passed by me quickly, she was probably was in a rush, she might have had something to do or she lost in thought)
5. Returning to a heart of love. (Example: Thank you God that you love me and I can love others. In fact, I can love the very person who hurt me by ___.)

This is the start of being Battle Ready. There truly are practical insights, wise biblical instructions, and truths that can help you rise above the mayhem of trials, and hardships. You can find the light of Christ and step into all God has for you.

The victory belongs to the Lord. Isn’t it time you began to make room for it?

Stuck

There is something so very calming about walking along the beach. Feeling the gritty grains of sand on my bare feet, and the gentle breeze as it lifts my hair to fully expose my face to the bright rays of the sun. It calms my spirit and feeds my soul.  As if in the overflow... God wants to fully reveal my inner spirit, the real me, to the world. And in that revelation, I feel His peace.

I revel in that peace. It is a balm to the inner wounds of my soul and spirit. I am walking out the process of being healed and made whole. In this healing, I am able to step forward into the ocean's waves...even as they begin to crash at my feet. He guides me, but I must keep moving forward into the depths of His love and grace.

There is freedom in this intentional forward movement. A dance with the waters, as they swirl around my knees. Oh, the freedom! I love the dance!

This is what I was created for...this freedom to walk into all He has purposed for my life.

And more...
“If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.” ~C.S. Lewis
And so I continue to wade into the waters, feeling the waves lift me and carry me,

"As You carry me, LORD, I surrender to Your path for my life. I feel You guiding me deeper still."

Sometimes the waves get a little rough. They rise up and slap me fully in the face. Still, I move forward as I regain my footing and catch my breath. Sometimes there is a struggle in moving forward into God's will. In breathing again, I am thrilled with the wonder of all He has created. And it fills me and enables me to continue on.

And then it happens. A rogue wave rises out of nowhere and knocks me off my feet! As the waves sweep over me, I struggle to regain my footing...there...there is the sand again. I dig in my heels to steady my body to let the waves sweep past me. Calm is restored. But I cannot move forward. I'm afraid to keep moving.

So I stand there, waist-deep. There will be more waves.

"Can You carry me, Lord? I'm not strong enough for this!"

I dig my heels further into the sand and refuse to move out into the deeper waters. I know He is calling me, but I am paralyzed with fear. I want to move...but as I hesitate, I feel the sands lifting and resettling around my feet as they sink further and further down into the sand ...the sinking sand. And I am STUCK! Unable to move forward into all He is calling me to. Into the wonder, into His grace. I feel the disgrace of the fall ...the shame of being stuck in my tracks.

And yet He calls me deeper still. Out of disgrace into His grace. As I reach out to take His hand, He pulls me out of the sinking sands. I move forward leaving fear and doubt in the wake of His love and mercy. And I am in awe of this God who loves me so.

Unstuck ... I am free! Free to walk deeper still into this calling. Into His arms...His strength. Into His grace.

What has you stuck? Let God take your hand and step forward into His grace. When you do ... those things that hold you back will begin to fall away. Leaving you free...UNSTUCK! Free to walk into all He created you to be.

Five Minute Friday is a weekly link-up, where Christian writers come together to write about a one-word prompt. This weeks word was STUCK. I had no plans to write today until I saw the FMF word for the week and then a photo posted on someone's FB page of ocean waves crashing on the sand. The word and photo began to meld together in my mind. God began to move me to write and this post was birthed.

I hope that it blesses you.

Savor The Taste ...A lesson from fresh ground coffee

I love coffee!!  A lot of people say they love coffee, but really, it's just the caffeine they are addicted to. Not so with me.  I really love the taste of pure, unadulterated coffee. No cream. No sugar. And definitely no "flavors"! I want nothing to get between these taste buds and that wonderful taste and aroma of black coffee.

In fact, once I savor my one-to-three cups of "fully leaded" coffee, I then switch to a good brand of caffeine-free just to continue enjoying the deliciousness of the coffee flavor.

Coffee is a very important part of getting my mornings off to a good start. So, pouring a hot, steaming cup of coffee is the first thing I do …that is, unless the Hubs leaves the house before letting the dogs out and getting them through their morning routine. In that case, of course, I have to take care of their needs first.  Once done...I pick out one of my favorite mugs and pour that first cup, just basking in the delicious aroma as I carry it up the stairs to my office ...to my big comfy chair, where I curl up with my coffee, reading glasses, and my Bible.

Now, at this point, I would love to say that nothing comes between me and the "pure unadulterated"
quiet time I have with the Lord, with His word, and in prayer and meditation ...and some mornings that is absolutely true. However, my office can be a whirlwind of distraction with unfinished projects, to-do lists, books, books, and more books; just waiting to be tackled, checked off, and devoured (I am a voracious reader).  Not to mention the noise and flurry of whatever new "adventure" my puppy, Clair, is getting into.

So ...some mornings the distractions lead me away from my intended goal of spending time in the Word, listening for His voice, and praying to have "ears to hear and eyes to see" what the Lord has for me.
Instead, my ears and eyes are being bombarded with Clair bringing me some new “toy” she has just discovered from the bathroom trash can—and now the utterance, “Dear Lord,” is not exactly the beginning of a heartfelt prayer!

So I contemplate this morning...I absolutely love my morning quiet time, and I really do hate when I let distractions interrupt that time ...  but do I crave those times as I crave that first cup of coffee?

Do I "wait in expectation" as David says in Psalm 5:3, to hear God's voice in answer to my prayers?  I don't want anything to dilute the pure taste of my coffee. Am I allowing the silly distractions of my mornings to dilute my time in the Word, in quiet contemplation…listening for His voice?

As I have stated before, I named this blog "Captive Heart" because that truly is my greatest desire ...to have a heart that is captivated by the grace and love of my Lord and Savior ...a heart that is not distracted by the busyness and noise of this world.

I want to savor all that God has for me ...to have eyes to see and ears to hear what He has in store for me this day and every day!   I want to be used by God in whatever way He chooses to bring love and healing to those He puts in my path. I want to hunger after His Word.  I want to say with the psalmist, "How sweet are your words to my taste".

So, with coffee in hand, I will continue to my office each morning with expectation.

How about you ...how do you begin your day?

For me ...to savor the pure undiluted/unadulterated time with my Lord ...ahhhh. ...now that hits the spot!!

In the morning Lord, you hear my voice;

in the morning I lay my requests before you

and wait expectantly.  ~Psalm 5:3

Something to think about for the New Year

As I was looking in some of my old books and journals for new inspiration for the New Year, I ran across this journal entry that I had written almost five years ago...it hit me as worthy to repost here as it made me consider my pursuit of the Holy...

"The whole of life of the good Christian is a holy longing." St Augustine, Bishop of Hippo.

The questions in the journal after this quote were: What do you think about this statement? Have you seen the truth of it played out in your life? How? How might having a "holy longing" lead to a "good Christian" life?

As I pondered these questions... this is what I wrote:

I believe this to be a true statement(referring to the quote above). The "holy longing" is the longing to be in intimate fellowship with our Creator.
We are like the "moth to the flame" in that we are drawn to the light of God's grace and love, and to His perfect character... to His Glory. The closer to the flame we get the more our sins are illuminated and "burned off" in our confession and repentance. Our old self is "burned away" as our new self begins to reflect His glory more and more.
I have always been like that moth...drawn to God...drawn to living a life that will please Him. Longing to get rid of my old selfish and corrupt flesh and to be renewed by His Holy Spirit....even all the while, struggling to protect the flesh from the "burns of conviction".

I named this blog "Captive Heart" because that is my longing more than anything else on this earth...to have a heart captive to the love and grace of my Lord and Savior. That will continue to be my resolution in the dawn of this new year...to pursue the Holy and grow in intimacy with God. What about you?

Do you have a holy longing?
